Standing 'O' for Green
November 04, 2009 | 04:35 PM
It has been announced Village Hall will soon get a needed sprucing up. Refurbishments are said to include some new carpeting and repainting. Village officials stress only products low in volatile organic compounds would be used, keeping in line with the Port Jefferson Go Green theme. Golf clap.

Our village is already in the second year of the Port Jefferson Go Green project sponsored by the Humanities Institute at Stony Brook University. This is a good thing and we believe environmental awareness has been raised — the prerequisite for change.

But we grow impatient to see our village take a leap forward. Port Jefferson should embrace The Green. Come on people, let's really go Green. Show us some photovoltaics, maybe a solar roof on the new storage building at the golf course, or put a freestanding solar panel or wind turbine at the highway department on North Country Road. Or how about recycling trash in the commercial district? Or adding hybrid vehicles to the village fleet? Why not use biodiesel to power our engines?

Implement any one of those initiatives or come up with another one or a better one, and we will meet it with real applause.
