Town Democratic chair to resign Turley says she must spend time on her law practice, family

November 05, 2009 | 04:30 PM Elaine Turley plans to step down as chairwoman of the Smithtown Democratic Party, she said Tuesday.
Turley, who recently earned a law degree and opened her own practice last year, said she would resign leadership of the town committee as of Jan. 1 in order to devote her time to her business and family.
"I just really need to focus on my law practice and my family," said the Fort Salonga resident, adding that she was overdue to take her teenage daughter, a high school senior, to visit prospective colleges.
Turley said she had planned on quitting the post during law school, but felt an obligation to continue on until a successor could take over the reins. "I don't see that happening," she said Tuesday night at Democratic headquarters.
Democrats gathered that night witnessed the party, already at a disadvantage in a town where a majority of residents are registered as Republicans, lose what few elected municipal posts it controlled in Smithtown. But Turley said her decision to step down was not due to electoral disappointment, pointing out that she had helped elect several Democrats in her years as party leader.
"Even if we lose, I have never regretted having worked hard on these campaigns because I just think it's such a necessary part of democracy — you've got to have the debate," Turley said. Also, she added, "I got to work with some terrific people."
