The school board has stated the bond, which will be used primarily to replace decades-old flat roofs at Ward Melville High School and both junior high schools, will impose "virtually no local cost" to district taxpayers. About $1.4 million of the total is EXCEL aid from New York State, specifically targeted to school construction projects. The remaining $6.8 million is state building aid. Some expense to district residents will be incurred to cover interest costs over the 15-year term of the bond. District officials have estimated the cost to district residents will average about $2 per year added to their property tax bills.
