Brookhaven Councilman Keith Romaine dies

Brookhaven Town Public Information Officer Kevin Molloy reported Saturday that Councilman Keith Romaine (R-Center Moriches) died that morning at a hospital in Nassau County. Romaine had just won re-election to a second term Nov. 3 and participated in the most recent Town Board meeting on Nov. 10, although he looked pale and did not join his colleagues in front of the dais to present two proclamations.

Romaine, 36, was reportedly suffering from pneumonia and died from complications. Molloy said the councilman, single with no children, sought treatment last Wednesday and was admitted to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. Romaine was moved to Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola where he passed away late morning on Nov. 14.

The councilman was the son of Suffolk County Legislator Ed Romaine (R-Center Moriches).

Romaine won re-election with 49 percent of the vote against Democrat Ron Lupski and Independence candidate Joe May. Vacancies in elected office such as Town Council are filled by special election, which must be held no less than 60 days or more than 90 days following the vacancy.

In lieu of flowers, the Romaine family has requested that donations be made in the name of Keith Romaine to the St. John The Evangelist Roman Catholic Church Food Pantry at 25 Ocean Avenue, Center Moriches.

Funeral arrangements have been made at Sinneckson's Funeral Home, 203 Main Street, Center Moriches (631-878-0065). Viewing will be on Monday, Nov. 16, from 7 to 9 pm and Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A funeral mass will be held at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at St. John The Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 25 Ocean Avenue, Center Moriches with internment to follow.
