'E-Waste' Recycling Day
Councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld has announced a no-cost "E-Waste" Recycling Event at Ward Melville High School on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 8 am to 1 pm.

Items that can be recycled include TVs, VCRs, DVD players, projectors, camcorders, radios, stereos, PDAs, pagers, phones, cell phones, answering and fax machines, copiers, calculators, electronic typewriters, computers and laptops, monitors, printers, scanners, routers, modems, cables, computer mice, hard drives, CD ROMs, circuit boards, power supplies, backup batteries, and handheld electronic toys.

Cell phones can be donated to the town's Senior Citizens Division, where they will be reconfigured to make 911 calls only.

3V Trust dinner and raffle
The Three Village Community Trust will host An Evening with Cy Merkezas, an "accidental preservationist," at 7:30 pm on Thursday, Nov. 19, at the Setauket Neighborhood House. Tickets are $30 per person or $50 per couple which includes wine, hors d'oeuvres, desserts and prizes. A limited 200-ticket raffle for one of three paintings by Doug Reina or Marjorie Freedman will be held with tickets priced at $25 each. West Meadow Beach programs
The Town of Brookhaven Parks Dept. will host a series of environmental programs at West Meadow Beach through November, to be conducted by Eileen Gerle, environmental educator. On Nov. 21 from 10 to 11 am Be a Litter Detective for ages 8 and up - Where does all the litter on the beach come from? Learn about the sources and impacts of marine debris, and what you can do to help.

The salt marshes, intertidal flats, shallows, and abundant vegetation of the West Meadow Beach peninsula provide feeding habitat for a variety of avian species. Grab your binoculars and meet in the parking lot for the latest Birding Walk on Nov. 25 at 11 am. Walks last from 1½ to 2 hours.

All Programs Meet at the Pavilion. Reservations are required for all programs. Call Eileen at 631-751-7863. Programs will not be conducted in inclement weather. Dates and times are subject to change.

Electric Parade coming
Local groups, businesses, schools, clubs and organizations are invited to sign up now to create or sponsor floats, become sponsors by donating funds, trailers, generators, trucks, etc. or otherwise participate in this year's 15th annual Setauket "Electric" Holiday Parade. Stepoff will be at 5 pm on Sunday, Dec. 13, at the Setauket Village Green, concluding with Santa Visits for Kids at the East Setauket Pond Park, across from the Three Village Chamber of Commerce office. The parade is sponsored by the Three Village Chamber of Commerce, the Setauket Fire Department, Times Beacon Record Newspapers and the Three Village Kiwanis Club. Being an American essay contest
A nationwide contest for high school students answering the question, "What civic value do you believe is most essential to being an American?" opened in September, sponsored by the Bill of Rights Institute in Arlington, Vir. and funded by the David H. Koch (New York City), Amway Global (Ada, Mich.), and the Jack Miller Family Foundation (Buffalo Grove, Ill.). Each of nine regions of the U.S. will be awarded first, second and third place prizes of $5,000, $2,500 and $1,250 each with seven honorable mentions receiving $250 each. The teachers of the winning students will also be awarded identical prizes. The contest closes on Dec. 1 and winners will be announced in spring 2009. In addition, the top three winners from each region, their teacher, and a guardian will be awarded an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. in the spring of 2010.
