This holiday season the children and families of North Shore Montessori School in Stony Brook are collecting nonperishable food items to benefit Lighthouse Mission in Bellport. Lighthouse Mission is a non-denominational food pantry that currently serves approximately 3,000 families a week. The children are learning the importance of caring for neighbors and community, which is part of the Montessori philosophy.

Additional community donations will be accepted between now and Nov. 20 at the North Shore Montessori School, 218 Christian Ave., Stony Brook.
