Melville eliminated from state tourney

The season has finally ended for the Patriot girls' volleyball team. "Our goal this year was to get back upstate and see what happened," said Ward Melville girls' volleyball coach Charles Fernandes, speaking of the New York State volleyball championship tournament. What happened upstate was elimination from the finals by the slimmest of margins.

In pool play on Nov. 21 at Glens Falls the Patriots split their opening round games with the eventual Class AA state champion Canandaigua. In the second session on Saturday Ward Melville swept Pine Bush 25-19, 25-19. The Patriots then advanced to play Baldwinsville, needing to win only one more game to play again on Sunday.

"We took a 21-18 lead against Baldwinsville," said Fernandes. "And now the crowd is growing around our court, just going wild. We led 23-22 and 25-24 with the serve. We just didn't close them out."

Baldwinsville finally triumphed at 29-27 and advanced to Sunday. "In the final game we were just gassed," said Fernandes. "We came so close and had nothing left."

Fernandes set the bar high for this talented team and they achieved a great deal: a Suffolk County championship and a Long Island title. Fernandes said, "We had two or three chances to move on to Sunday and we just missed some shots. So, we basically got knocked out by the champ, but we'll be back. We lose three good seniors from this team, but we had a lot of juniors and sophomores and an impact freshman running around out there, too. Our future is bright."
