Woman arrested in fatal hit and run

Police on Wednesday arrested Maureen Lambert, 20, of Parish Court, Stony Brook, after a hit-and-run crash that killed an 11-year-old girl in in front of 27 East Main Street in Smithtown on Nov. 24. Fourth Squad detectives charged Lambert with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash. She was held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Nov. 26.

SCPD reported on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at about 7 pm, Courtney Sipes, 11, was crossing East Main Street in Smithtown on foot, just east of Lawrence Avenue, when a white pickup truck or SUV, traveling westbound on East Main Street, struck her. The vehicle left the scene.

Sipes was transported by ambulance to St. Catherine of Siena Hospital in Smithtown, where she died of her injuries.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
