Teen killed while riding bike
November 26, 2009 | 10:43 AM
Fourth Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Ronkonkoma teenage bicyclist on Wednesday.

Alex Helkin was driving his 1999 Mazda on Route 347 at Terry Road in Smithtown when his car struck a bicyclist, who was riding northbound across the road.

According to witnesses, Helkin, 25, of Farmingdale, had a green light and was driving westbound on Route 347 when the bicyclist, Nicholas Svercel, 15, of Ronkonkoma, started crossing Route 347.

Svercel had been riding with three other teenagers and he may have believed the light changed, allowing him to cross the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.
