The Council of Dedicated Merchants and the Port Jefferson Station-Terryville Chamber of Commerce have joined forces.

CDM tourism director Mike Poveromo said the council, which serves Mount Sinai, Miller Place, Sound Beach and Rocky Point, merged with the chamber about two months ago to create the Council of Dedicated Merchants Chamber of Commerce. After eight months of discussion, Poveromo said the new group was formed to continue the mission of supporting local businesses by encouraging residents to shop locally.

With more than 400 members, the CDM Chamber will host its first event Dec. 5 at the railroad car on the corner of Route 347 and Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station, Poveromo said. From 4 to 6 pm, residents will enjoy a visit from Santa Claus and hot chocolate from the Cedar Beach Concession, followed by a Christmas tree lighting ceremony at 6 pm. This event has been a tradition of the PJS-Terryville Chamber for over a decade, according to Poveromo. Kevin Cantwell of Farm Family Insurance in Miller Place, who has donated trees for the past four years, will provide this year's tree as well, Poveromo said.

The CDM Chamber will host another Christmas tree lighting Dec. 12 from 5 to 6 pm at the Aliano Shopping Center on Route 25A in Miller Place, the director said. The 30-foot tree, which has been planted at the plaza, was donated by the Aliano family to thank the community for its support for their child who was injured last year, Poveromo said. The tree will now be decorated annually by the unified chamber to celebrate the holidays.

The tourism director, who owns Family Time Party Rentals in Mount Sinai, said the PJS-Terryville Chamber and CDM decided it would be "better for the membership to unite" in an "effort to unify the Route 25A business district." "With these economic times," Poveromo said, "hopefully we can accomplish that mission."
