Harborfields dominates Comsewogue
January 13, 2010 | 04:40 PM
An 18-0 second-quarter run by Harborfields was more than enough to upend host Comsewogue on Saturday, 53-30, in a League V girls basketball game. The win improves the Tornadoes overall record to 8-2 (6-0 in league) while the Warriors fell to 5-5 (3-3 in league).

"We played very good defense," said Harborfields head coach Russ Tietjen. "That's the reason we are able to win these games. In the second quarter we got the opportunity to get to the basket; our defense led to offense."

Eleven different Tornadoes found their way into the scoring column with junior Jane Amchin leading the way with 11 points. Freshman Bridgit Ryan chipped in with 8 points while sophomore Kasey Stolba added 6 and hauled down seven rebounds.

Comsewogue, playing down three athletes, including two starters, was hard pressed to score. Sophomore Cindy Edwards paced the Warriors with 9 points and five rebounds. Junior Michele Rubino added 7 points and freshman Kerri MacKinnon picked up 5.

Both teams were slow out of the gate. In fact, the first couple of points of the game weren't scored until 3:08 had elapsed from the clock. That's when Jackie Lattanza (3 points) scored at 4:52 giving Comsewogue a 2-0 lead. It would be the only lead the Warriors would hold all game. Harborfields quickly responded with two straight baskets to take a 4-2 lead. The Warriors never came any closer than 4 points. The team trailed 8-4 by the end of the first.

Leading 14-10, the Tornadoes' defense clamped down on the Warriors, turning Comsewogue turnovers into Harborfields points. If the defense wasn't stealing the ball or forcing Comsewogue to give the ball away, they led the Warriors into numerous shot clock violations as Comsewogue desperately sought a way to penetrate the Tornadoes' defense. The net result was a 25-0 run ending in a 29-10 Harborfields lead. The Tornadoes went into the half holding a commanding 19-point lead at 32-13.

The Warriors also struggled against a tough Harborfields team in the third. Comsewogue continued to turn the ball over and Harborfields made them pay for every mistake. The Tornadoes opened with a 4-0 run to take a 36-13 lead.

Rubino, Comsewogue point guard, was blocked for most of the game by Harborfields junior Lynn Zhong. She (7 points) got the Warriors on the board by hitting a 3-pointer to cut the Tornadoes lead to 20 at 36-16. Although the Warriors broke into double-digit scoring with 10 points, Harborfields netted 13 for the quarter taking a 45-23 lead at the end of three.

"Their kids can handle the ball," said Comsewogue head coach Bill Lyons. "When things go bad for us we have to try harder. When the ball doesn't go in the basket we tend to get down on ourselves. We had an offensive drought in the second quarter. We are going to have to defend better until we can get the offense sorted out."
