Smithtown grapplers dominate Wrestling
|
January 21, 2010 | 10:50 AM In what was little more than a scrimmage, the Smithtown East Bulls defeated host Centereach 64-6 last Friday night in League III wrestling. The win improves the Bulls league record to 2-1, 4-1 overall and keeps them within one win of undefeated East Islip and North Babylon. The loss drops the Cougars to 0-4, 0-9 overall.
Smithtown won their first eight decisions beginning with a forfeit at 135 pounds. In fact, so dominant were the Bulls that they won six of the 13 bouts by pin, won another two by major decision, one by technical fall, two by forfeit and only one by a regular decision. Only five bouts went the full three rounds.
The lone Centereach shining moment came at 112 pounds where Luc Noens, Centereach's only senior, pinned Smithtown's Justin Burns at the 54 second mark of the second round. "Luc has been our bright spot all year," said Centereach head coach Chris Posillico. "We're real young this year. We've got a lot of sophomores and juniors on the mat."
The Cougars had two opportunities to pick up wins. At 130 pounds Sion Sosa led Eric Binder by a solid 9-0 score at the end of the first round only to see Binder turn around and pin him at 1:21 of the second round. Also, while competing at 145 pounds, James Banzer grappled Brendan Oseback to a 4-4 tie at the end of one round, and even held a brief 5-4 lead before Oseback came back and pinned Banzer in the second round.
"It's a little hard this year because I'm the only senior," said Noens who has posted an 18-5 overall mark thus far, 5-3 in dual meets. "I'm kind of expected to work hard and come out on top."
For the Bulls, however, things went according to plan. "Every match you have things you have to work on," said Smithtown head coach Dave Cummings. "They're a young team and anyone can be there at any time. It's tough for them. All we wanted to do was have our kids wrestle to their ability and they did that."
Winning by pins for Smithtown East were Casey O'Malley at 140 pounds; Oseback at 145 pounds; Dan Reiter at 160 pounds; Branson Burger at 103 pounds; Dan Burns at 119 pounds; and Binder at 130 pounds. Winners by major decision were Kyle Eagan at 152 pounds and Tom Kopiske at 171 pounds. Pat Falk won by technical fall at 189 pounds and Dylan Clay won an 8-1 decision at 125 pounds. The 135 and 215-pound weight classes were forfeit by Centereach.
This weekend Smithtown will compete in a tournament at Walt Whitman and Centereach will travel to Newfield on Jan. 22 for a 6:30 pm match.
