Cops: Sex offender strikes, arrested after failing to register address

| | | Michael Schoefer. SCPD (click for larger version) | | January 22, 2010 | 11:06 AM Police today arrested a registered sex offender for failing to register an address change and for forcibly touching a 20-year-old woman.
Special Victims Section detectives arrested Michael Schoefer, 51, a Level 3 sex offender, for failing to register an address change within 10 days as required by New York State. During the course of the investigation, detectives determined that a Port Jefferson woman alleged Schoefer touched her in September 2009.
Schoefer was charged with Forcible Touching, a Class A Misdemeanor and Failure to Register which was upgraded from a Class E Felony to a Class D Felony because of a prior conviction for failing to register.
Schoefer, who is undomiciled, was known to frequent Northport, Smithtown, Stony Brook, Port Jefferson and Riverhead. He has been registered as a sex offender since 2007 and has several arrests and convictions for a variety of charges including Sexual Abuse, Stalking, Forcible Touching, Criminal Mischief, Public Lewdness and Resisting Arrest.
Schoefer was held overnight at the Seventh Precinct and will be arraigned today at First District Court in Central Islip.
