Police have arrested an undomiciled man and charged him with setting fire to a vacant building in Port Jefferson Station on Saturday, Jan. 23.

Police and firefighters responded to a fire at the former Hi-Lite Diner at Route 347 and Old Town Road in Port Jefferson Station at 3:52 am. Firefighters from the Terryville Fire Department, with assistance from the Selden, Setauket, Port Jefferson and Mt. Sinai fire departments, extinguished the fire, which severely damaged the building.

Indication of ongoing squatter activity in the building led to the pump-out of the foundation, which was filled with water, performed with the assistance of the Town of Brookhaven.
