Commack finishes season 10-9 Wrestling
|
February 04, 2010 | 10:55 AM It has been a grueling year for Commack's wrestling team, one that has seen the Cougars battle a top 10 team week after week. Commack has wrestled seven of Suffolk's top 10 teams and two of Nassau County's. The team finished up their season with a 10-9 record in League I.
Friday night Commack, coached by Bill DeSario, gave No. 3 Longwood all it could handle, only to fall 43-19.
On Longwood's home turf, the Cougars got off to a good start when Joe Michalski (171) won by a major decision over Jesse Cahill, 12-1. Brian Gerlach (189) followed with a 9-6 triumph over Robert Dumas and Rocco DeForca (215) defeated Joe Licausi, 6-5.
Trailing 10-0, the Lions got rolling with their two All-State brothers, Cory and Malik Rasheed defeating Kyle Reim and Tyler Rosenberg. A string of four straight wins was broken when Garret DiMattei (130) used a lateral drop to pin Mike Sweeney in 6:40 of overtime. But that was the last of the Cougar wins until Dean Jeziorkowski (160) decisioned Matt Durso, 8-4, in the final bout of the evening.
On Saturday the Cougars were beaten by the No. 1 ranked team in the state in John Glenn, 54-3. After those meets, everything else seemed easy. At the John Glenn duals, Commack defeated Kellenburg, 64-10, Islip "B" 54-15 and Ward Melville "B" 80-4.
Commack came in second at the John Glenn duals. DeForca (215) came through the day unscathed winning all four of his bouts. Brian Gerlach (189) won three of four and was named Wrestler of the Week by the Commack coaching staff.
Also winning three bouts on Saturday were Dylan Baggetta (125), Garrett DiMattei (130), Chris Palazzolo (140), Nick Smith (145), Andrew Lopes (152), Dean Jeziorkowski (160) and Joe Michalski (171).
This Saturday, Feb. 6, Commack will host the League I tourney. Action begins at 9:30 am and will run continuously throughout the day. The finals are slated for 6 pm. The top three place finishers will qualify for the Section XI Suffolk County tournament, which will be held at Stony Brook University on Feb. 12 and 13. The New York State championships will be Feb. 26-27 in Albany.
