Eagan earns 100th career win Wrestling
|
February 04, 2010 | 10:57 AM The Smithtown Bulls from both sides of town competed in the Sachem East wrestling tournament last Saturday. Eight schools from Suffolk County took part in the festivities.
The Smithtown East Bulls achieved some strong performances during the Sachem East tourney. With a loss to last year's second place county winner in the finals, senior Kyle Eagan (152) took home the silver medal. Eagan's semifinal victory marked the talented wrestler's 100th career win. "We haven't had someone reach 100 wins in a real long time," Smithtown East head coach Dave Cummings said.
Smithtown East had three wrestlers take home the bronze medal. Branson Berger (96) lost in the semifinals 7-5. "He had a great season," said Cummings.
Senior Dylan Clay (125) finished in third with an 8-5 loss in the semifinals. "He is a very hard worker," Cummings said. Luke Outcault (135) was defeated 3-2 in a very competitive semifinal match.
Smithtown West head coach Ken Leverich was really proud of his team's performance. "The boys were winning the close matches at the end of the season," he said. "They will peak just in time for counties."
Smithtown West's Joe Hunsucker (145) had a first place victory, which earned him the outstanding wrestler award in the tournament. He won four matches to dominate the competition. This included a 7-0 shutout over a Sachem East athlete, who defeated Hunsucker in a close match earlier in the season.
West's Jake Smith (189), who has the most wins in Smithtown wrestling history with 128, was successful once again. He took the silver medal with three pins on the day. Smith, who lost to Chris D'Ilorio of Sachem East, is second in the county right now. "He is gunning to wrestle him again in the county tournament," said Leverich.
Smithtown West's Joe Weitemeyer (160) is a strong wrestler, who has a goal to become a league champion and place in the counties. "He's well on the way," Leverich said. In the Sachem East tournament, Weitemeyer placed third defeating Smithtown East senior Dan Reiter in the consolation finals. "It was a great performance in a tight match," said Leverich.
West's Joe Nappi also had an impressive tournament. Nappi placed third with a win in the last second of the consolation round. "That was the highest he had placed all year," said Leverich. Steven Salvatore (215) also had a strong third place finish for the squad.
