Fresh from defending The Stony Brook School's annual Brohard tournament four days earlier, the Comsewogue Warriors wrestling team defeated the Newfield Wolverines, 47-18, in their annual nonleague match at JFK Middle School Jan. 27. The win gave the Warriors a best-ever school record of 13-6 in dual meet competition.

"The meet went exactly as I thought it would go," said Comsewogue head coach Brian Fitzgerald. "We have one more meet against Islip and then the League V championship next week and I think we should be able to place a couple of guys in the Suffolk County meet."

For the rebuilding Wolverines, the loss dropped them to 12-16 overall in dual meet competition and 3-3 in League III. "We have a really young team and some of the kids surprised me," said head coach Mike Newell. "As for today's meet we had a few kids out of the starting lineup at 125, 135, 140 and 152 pounds. We went out and competed, but we gave up pins and bonus points and I don't like that. Overall, I am pleased with how the team has wrestled this year, especially in our league meets. "

The Warriors won the first three bouts of the match to jump out to a 13-0 lead. Newfield never recovered even though they trimmed the Comsewogue lead to four points, at 13-9, at one stage. In all, the Warriors won two bouts by major decision and five bouts by pin behind Ryan Brunet at 171 pounds, Nick Wiggers at 103 pounds, Russell Pisano at 119 pounds, Paul Young at 135 pounds and Ross Slotnick at 145 pounds.

Newfield pinned only two of their opponents as Coltan Fusaro, at 189 pounds, and Tyler Lewis, at 130 pounds, gave Newfield 12 of their 18 points. The Wolverines won just two other bouts the

entire match. One of these was the continued season-long highlight put up by Julian Santiago at 215 pounds. The sophomore's 4-0 decision over Billy Postupak maintained Santiago's dual meet mastery as the team heads into the League III tournament this weekend. Santiago has posted a stellar 20-11 record this year after not wrestling at all in his freshman year.

"He originally wasn't planning on coming out for the team," said Newell. "But he's really showing a level of commitment that I wasn't expecting."

Anthony Hirschfield was the other Newfield win. Hirschfield won by decision, 11-5.
