February 04, 2010 | 01:07 PM
Over 20 girls track teams from across Suffolk County competed in the small school championships Friday night. All tried as best they could to earn points for their respective school, but it was the Kings Park girls track team that won the county title for the second time in the past three years.

The Kingsmen grabbed a total of 97.50 points compared to the defending champion Mount Sinai, who came in a distant second with 66 points, Eastport-South Manor was third with 34 and Miller Place, Half Hollow Hills West and Shoreham-Wading River tied for fourth with 25 points.

"It went pretty much as planned," said Kings Park head coach Rob Muller. "I'm real proud of the girls. They've worked hard all year. We're very deep and well rounded in that we have a lot of individuals who can score points. We also have a strong jumping team. More than half our points came in jumping events."

The Kingsmen earned four first places, five second and three third for a total of 92 of their 97.50 points. "Kings Park has been exceptional all year long," said Mount Sinai head coach Bill Dwyer. "We scored the same number of points last year when we won. But it was not a surprise this year. We won or placed in almost every running event but Kings Park was able to place multiple winners in many events and they won a lot of the field events. Everyone on our team did exceptionally well and I'm happier this year than I was last year."

First-place winners for Kings Park were Kathleen Naeher (600 meters), the 4x800-meter relay team, Tara Greco (long jump and triple jump). Runners up for the Kingsmen were Christine Hagan (1,000 meters), Nicki Torabene (1,500-meter race/walk), Greco (high jump) and Cookie Wyckoff (long jump). Taking third place honors were Amanda Jones (1,500-meter race/walk), Kayla Koelbel (long jump and triple jump).

Scoring points for the Mustangs were senior Janet Mellor, who claimed first in the 55-meter dash, 55-meter hurdles and 300-meter dash; junior Janie Turek won the 1,000-meter run, the 500-meter run and came in second place in the 4x800-meter relay; senior Brittany Callahan was first in the 3,000-meter run.

Shoreham-Wading River sophomore Shannon McDonnell took second in the 600-meter run. The 4x400-meter relay team took third place, while freshman Laura Lee placed sixth in the 1,000-meter run and junior Danielle Opatovsky won the 1,500-meter race/walk.

Shoreham-Wading River head coach, Paul Koretzki joked and said, "We graduated too many kids over the past five years. Right now we're just young and haven't gotten it back yet. But we will. We just don't have enough depth yet especially in the field events."

Next week all the Suffolk County high schools will compete at the qualifying meet to see who earns the right to attend the New York State championships at Cornell.
