Much to do in 2010

Our new year has emerged as a lion thus far. The devastation in Haiti has impacted all of us on many levels. The lives of so many people have changed forever. We have been assisting both staff and clients who have been personally impacted by this tragedy and stand ready to assist others who have been affected. Anyone in need of counseling can call 647-3100 ext. 121.

With 83 years of service behind us, we move into our 84th year with an ongoing commitment to restoring hope and rebuilding lives for Long Islanders. A new year brings a feeling of hope to the tens of thousands of children and families who pass through our doors every day, and with the talented staff and dedicated board, we will stick to our mission to ensure 2010 brings positive changes to those in need.

We look forward to developing additional after-school programs to complement school-day learning to assist youngsters in attaining the skills needed to succeed; and working with communities to prevent and reduce gang violence, and reducing homelessness. We have much to do in 2010 as Family Service League continues to be the safety net for scores of vulnerable children and families who turn to us for help.

We thank you, our loyal donors and friends, for making the commitment to continue to support our work in 2010. We cannot do what we do without your generosity.

On a personal note, the not-for-profit world lost a good friend and colleague late January with the untimely and sudden passing of Jim Harnett, president and CEO of our Nassau sibling organization, Family and Children's Association. Jim was a tireless advocate for the underserved, selfless leader and a wonderfully compassionate person. Family Service League and Family & Children's Association have worked side by side for many years to strengthen children and families throughout Long Island. All of us in the human service sector mourn his loss.

Karen Boorshtein, president/CEO
