Your volunteers at work

In response to the letter "Your taxes at work" (Jan. 21): The NYC Fire Department will often hold members over (overtime pay) during major snowstorms. The reason behind this is to have the additional members necessary for snow removal at hydrants and extra hands due to the difficult weather conditions.

The volunteer fire service will, at times, plow their members' driveways to allow members to quickly drive to the nearest fire station. This will result in a timely response to fire or emergency and ambulance calls.

The letter writer should consider helping his neighbor in the next major snowstorm.

Lou Andrade, FDNY (retired)

East Setauket

The writer is an active Setauket volunteer firefighter and former SFD fire commissioner.
