Polar Bear thanks ...

On New Year's Day, Boy Scout Troop 410 and the Northport Smoke Eaters held their first annual Polar Bear Swim at Steers Beach. The event was a huge success with an incredible turnout and donations totaling $2,400 for the Northport Food Pantry. We would like to thank everyone who came out to support us, especially those who helped to make this event a success including: Copenhagen Bakery for gathering pledges and then donating food for the shivering swimmers; Lewisy Fuel for donating the fuel to heat our warming station; the Northport Fire Department Ambulance crew and Water Rescue Unit for keeping everyone safe; Eve Van Dyke of St. Paul's Church for serving hot chocolate; and Mayor George Doll for making a surprise appearance in his boat and cheering us all on. We also want to thank our Northport Village officials who gave us their support as we went forward with our plans for this event. Most of all, we want to thank all of the gracious people of Northport that participated or donated by sponsoring our swimmers. We hope that next year will be an even greater event for the Northport community as we all join to help our neighbors in need.
