Woman arrested in fatal hit and run

Police on Wednesday arrested Maureen Lambert, 20, of Parish Court, Stony Brook, after a hit-and-run crash that killed an 11-year-old girl in in front of 27 East Main Street in Smithtown.

There's a new commanding officer in town. Inspector Robert Oswald has been promoted to commanding officer of the Suffolk County Police Department's 6th Precinct, taking the place of Inspector Frank Stallone, who was elevated to deputy chief in the office of the county Chief of Detectives.

Upon waking Monday morning, Port Jefferson resident Joe Dombrowski heard machinery on his block in the Laurita Manor neighborhood. He looked out the window to see the Village Highway Department using heavy equipment to clear leaf bags and unbagged leaves from the street.

A complainant called from a building on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station at 3:44 pm Nov. 11 to report an intoxicated male standing in the vestibule adamantly refusing to leave the property. Police responded to the location and resolved the situation.

In Port Jefferson, the Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Christmas tree lighting Saturday, Nov. 28, at 4:30 pm following the annual Santa Parade. That parade steps off at 1 pm at the Long Island Rail Road station and marches down Main Street to the Chamber's visitor information office on West Broadway, where the tree lighting will take place. The CDM Chamber will host a tree lighting Dec. 5 at the railroad car on the corner of Route 347 and Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station.

Dredging put off until 2010

Unofficial plans to reduce the silt clogging the passage through Stony Brook Harbor before the close of 2009 have been postponed until next year while the county collects all the necessary permits.

A male complainant called at 3:44 pm Nov. 8 to report hiking along a trail in the woods adjacent to Route 25A in Wading River when he came across a "huge python snake" crawling on the path. The complainant told the police he was leaving the forest and would be waiting for arriving officers in a nearby parking lot. Police responded to the scene and checked the woods in search of the substantial serpent but could not locate any evidence of a redoubtable reptile.
