compare too
March 11, 2010 | 08:12 AM It seems that there are two groups that trade control of our ineffective government: the commercial district which is underassessed and soaks up revenue to the detriment of the rest of our village and the contractor/volunteer/ municipal worker interested in obtaining work/jobs and benefits. We haven't had a Mayor whose agenda is public service in a long time.We were in Huntington. What a difference! Clean too. We passed a crew working at 6pm on Wednesday. The store mix was impressive and the storefronts up to date. BtW, I worked there 20 years ago. Maybe i missed it but it seems they've got by without a parking garage, controversial back then Meters everywhere. If we stuck to our knitting here things would improve over time. Anybody heard anything about roadwork?
school board
March 10, 2010 | 07:40 PM here here to the one person who wrote in and said Collins is the only board member who speaks out. I agree she is wonderful and I wish we had more members like her. The rest of them no comment.
Numbers
March 10, 2010 | 01:05 PM Interesting that Bob Frey knows so much about Math and Math instruction, but somehow couldn't give the number of people who have approached him to say that the deparmentalization is "the greatest thing since sliced bread." More than 10, less than 25, etc.? What's the estimate?
He and Max claim that these people are "out there" but for guys who think Math is so important, they NEVER seem to be able to put a number on it !!
Somewhere in Port Jefferson is this bunker full of departmentalization supporters !
Funny Dr. Hubbard
March 10, 2010 | 12:59 PM Lauren Hubbard must be kidding....where has she been?
Did she really think the release of her big "secret news" about the purchase of lockers would solve the departmentalization debacle? The look on her face was priceless when she DID realize that people would not be thanking her and dancing in the streets!
WAKE UP, Lauren. Students academic, social and emotional futures are hanging in the balance !! Lockers are not the big issue.
Strong Leadership #1
March 10, 2010 | 12:46 PM A mark of good leadership is doing what is right even when it is not easy. Dr. Riley inherited a district with an unfocused elementary school whose policies & practices shifted as frequently as prominent residents could make appointments with Administrators. In a remarkably short time period, he identified shortcomings, took corrective actions and implemented sustainable solutions. Many decisions have been difficult and some have caused upheaval. In every instance, though, the focus has been right where it should have been all along; directly on the education & welfare of all our children. Departmentalization has created an environment for my son and all the other children to thrive. Compared to previous years, my son and his friends exhibit a much greater excitement for school. The quality of their work has improved significantly along with an increase in the depth & breadth of their assignments. I credit those who supported Departmentalization for this upturn.

BOE IS CLUELESS
March 10, 2010 | 11:19 AM This BOE is a disaster! It is appalling to me that the majority of the BOE blindly follows Reckless Riley. Hubbard and Doyle in particular should be ashamed of themselves. Clearly they are only concerned with what is good for their child. They both demonstrate that the prestige of a PhD. is never a substitute for good old common sense. It does not take a high IQ to see that Riley is leading PJSD down the path of destruction. As a community we must unite to change the composition of the BOE and GET RILEY OUT!
Light
March 10, 2010 | 10:30 AM I hope the Port Times Record was at last night's Port Jefferson School Board meeting.
I'm appalled that we're this far along and there is no budget.
The Superintendent is planning on presenting a budget on the very same day the board is supposed to vote on it.
Where is the opportunity for community input and yes ...criticism?
Putting forth 4% or more in this economy is an insult to residents.
Has the super cut to the bone? Has he asked for givebacks or help until this economic crisis is over?
Have these options been explored?

Why We Must Fire Bad Teachers
March 10, 2010 | 09:37 AM Newsweek has a very interesting article about "why we must fire bad teachers?"
I urge everyone to read it.
Lost Dog Spotted
March 10, 2010 | 09:18 AM A young male dog with a Beagle face, white body, brown and black spots was seen on Roosevelt Ave, near the president's streets around 8:30 this morning. He is very friendly. Last seen in the area of the High School running down Old Post Road. This pup has no collar on him and is in danger of being hit by a car. Will try to locate him again and update here.

The ELS Titanic
March 09, 2010 | 10:14 PM As the ELS Titanic sinks Mark Doyle touts, but our steering wheel still works in the brig!
Lauren Hubbard says, we still have to get to New York! as the halls fill with water
Stacy Zink says, now everyone back to your rooms and lock the doors, the compartments do work I tell you!!
The Super says we have our maps, we have our stations, we have our destination, I'll look into our situation later.
Mary Beth Collins says, everyone grab a life jacket and start heading up to the decks, we're getting out the boats!
As all the parents yell we're sinking, we're sinking....
And thus is my little fable about tonight's Board Meeting, the only person sitting on the Board that actually understands there is a problem is Collins, the rest are in various states of self rightousness and absorbtion. Doyle is talking about small size classrooms while the whole school is in disarray, Hubbard is saying we need to move forward. We've moved backward, get it! As for Stacy Zink, so condescending to the people in this Community. A disgrace.
With the exception of Collins, they all need to go, they have not give one shred of evidence of why this program is continuing. Heck, they even bought the lockers. Storage??? Okay and I have a boat to sell you named the Titanic.
