RE: Proper Planning
March 16, 2010 | 01:19 PM "All jobs in the district have a purpose".
A job might have a purpose, but is it necessary? Like the recently added position of guidance counseler in the elementary schools? We managed to survive all these years without that position, so why add it now? The JH guidance departments are excellent, no elementary student is left out. Why spend taxpayer money creating positions we can't afford. This is just one example, I'm sure there are many more. I would hope the district cuts these positions first and tries to leave the teaching positions, as they are the ones who impact the student education the most.

"That raises the awkward question of why didn't previous BOE's plan better? "
Hey folks, should we all go back to the beginning of time when man first learned how to make fire and blame them for the fact it took so long to invent lighters?
Please stop with digging up the past and let's try to focus on the future. Lessons have been learned by all and maybe this bad economy woke a few sleeping giants up. I, for one, hope that the changes being made now will somehow lower my taxes down the line. Without the intervention of a higher State authority , I'm not sure it will happen.

That raises the awkward question of WHY didn't previous BOEs plan better?
Answer: they were mostly union-backed candidates who danced to the union's tune. What was right for the community and its future was NOT their first priority.
re: Proper Planning
March 16, 2010 | 10:44 AM Everything you say is true, but when you ask " No one in their right mind would do that, so why is a taxpayer funded entity any different?" you should remember one thing. When the teachers' contract expires, they continue to work under it until a new contract is signed. So if, for instance, the old contract gives them 4% raises every year, why would they ever settle for less?

That doesn't change the fact that a bunch of good people, from different departments in the district, are going to lose their jobs.
You said "maybe these jobs should not have been added in the first place." They weren't 'make-believe' positions. All jobs in the district have a purpose. Now that some of these positions are going things will change and people will adjust. That, of course, would include the community at large.
3% increase really 6%
March 16, 2010 | 09:00 AM Don't forget the 3% increase does not count the 3% needed to pay for the bond, total increase 6%
Proper planning
March 16, 2010 | 08:57 AM "Well, you can add a bunch more that are school employees to your list. Even with the district cutting back staff, you folks are never going to be satisfied. That's just who you are".
Did you ever stop to think maybe these positions should not have been added in the first place? Or maybe such large contracts should not have been agreed to? Did anyone sit down and budget a 10 - 20 year spending plan? If jobs are lost, it's because the community can't sustain the spending. You can't spend what you don't have. Would you commit to a financial obligation knowing you could make the payments this year and hope money is there next year, or the year after? No one in their right mind would do that, so why is a taxpayer funded entity any different.
Re: cutbacks
March 16, 2010 | 08:32 AM " Even with the district cutting back staff..."
Perhaps through attrition (which is LONG overdue), but I haven't heard of ANY layoffs. Has anyone else?

"Lots of people in this district have already lost jobs but none of them have or will be school district employess..."
Well, you can add a bunch more that are school employees to your list. Even with the district cutting back staff, you folks are never going to be satisfied. That's just who you are.
