out of control
March 13, 2010 | 09:21 AM

you think that's bad, you should see the laws being broken right in front of Ocean Avenue Elementary school in the morning when the kids are being dropped off. u-turns every day despite no less than 6 no u-turn signs posted in front of the school. way to go parents...what is it going to take before you think the laws apply to you????

Who is enforcing the traffic laws?
March 04, 2010 | 05:27 PM

Today I drove down Ocean Avenue and a guy just goes right through the stop sign at Dogwood Avenue and then goes right through the stop sign at Valley Road where the stop signs are for kids to cross. Too many careless drivers out there. What does the Northport Police do to enfore the traffic laws? Where can one view the traffic violation enforcement statistics?
Traffic Laws: Stop signs
February 23, 2010 | 12:27 PM

Pick a corner and watch the cars roll through the stop sign. The law is a full stop at the stop sign. It is not slowing down as you glide through. It is not disregarding the sign all together either. You stop and look both ways.

I see it a lot in Northport and other places too. Don't take my word for it, just look yourself.
worry about what we have
January 30, 2010 | 11:21 AM

i'm wondering what our priorities are. Sidewalks and roads in need of significant repair, poorly installed drainage that works and looks terrible (Valley Rd.), empty houses that look like they are about to fall down and haven't been maintained AT ALL in years...let's focus on cleaning up, enforcing codes and taking care of what we already have instead of adding more govt. oversight to selectively enforce.

wondering...
Hysterical Preservation in Northport Village
January 27, 2010 | 12:05 PM

Historic Preservation laws that are slated to be passed next week in Northport are a classic example of too much government and not much common sense. We do not need Henry Tobin and the Sign Nazi's telling us what we can and can not do with our homes.

re. Curbs on Church St.
January 20, 2010 | 06:50 PM

The previous post complains that only parts of the Village have curbs. Anyone who has lived around here for a while knows some streets become a rushing river during a heavy rain. Those streets have to have curbs, I thank our village officials for sparing us the expense of constructing and maintaining curbs where they are not needed.. I think any homeowner can get permission to put in their own curbs in front of their house at their own expense. The village wants 6% more and the schools are talking about up to 6% . We just don't have it.

Curbs on Church Street, why not everyone have curbs?
January 20, 2010 | 01:31 PM

I would like Times Beacon Record to do a story on who paid for the curbs on Church Street and why houses in the village, such as half of Northport Bay Estates, never had any curbs whatsoever. My understanding is that houses built before the late 1960's weren't requried to have curbs. Then they were required to be in place for all new homes. Houses prior to the law just went without them.

Why does Church Street get new curbs and houses without them don't?
PLEASE get the facts!!

Carl,

To the best of my knowledge, the Village trustees and the Police Dept. have not yet reached an agreement, so what do you mean by "what was negotiated recently"?

What happened to common sense? The village saw 3 or 4 years of below-market tax increases. Did you think this would last forever? I do not run my household budget making believe that the cost of services/groceries/utilities are NOT going to increase!!!! But, prior to this board, that is exactly how the village budget had been prepared.

Why, in the name of God, would the village residents jeopardize their property values by getting rid of their police? There are many, many municipalities in Suffolk County alone who would LOVE to have their own police. Look at how Pt. Jeff, Patchogue, the Town of Islip, the Town of Brookhaven, the Town of Smithtown and yes, even our own Town of Huntington have formed ..."Dept. of Public Safety" or "Code Enforcement" or any other similar sounding entity, all with the same purpose...to fill in the gaps in the enforcement of quality of life issues that the SCPD simply cannot address.

I believe the residents of the Village of Northport enjoy a much better quality of life because of the existence of its police department.

Common Sense.

Soundview Center Building
January 15, 2010 | 06:28 PM

I'm all for having a new place for our veterans to go but $2.250 million , From the size of that building shown in the picture it doesn't look like a 2+million dollar building. Let's build it but tighten up , maybe reduce the size and add on later if necessary. None of us can afford any increase in taxes at all, Government must cut spending.
REAL ESTATE TAXES
January 11, 2010 | 04:00 PM

CARL

THERE ARE WAYS THAN WHAT YOU SUGGEST TO FIX THE TAXES FOR 'SOME' HOME OWNER.

1- FIND A WAY TO TAX HOME OWNERS WITH ILLEGAL APPARTMENTS, ILLEGAL HOME IMPROVEMENT AND UNDERASSESSED PROPERTY WHO ARE NOW FORCING THEIR NEIGHBORE TO PAY WHAT THE SHOULD BE PAYING .

ALSO SET UP A SEWER DISTRICT THAT WOULD NOT REQUIRE HOMEOWNERS WHO CAN NOT HOOK UP TO THE SEWER SYSTEM TO PAY FOR THOSE WHO DO.
