Education Today
March 08, 2010 | 01:52 PM The Administration has the teachers terrified of losing their jobs if they speak up for the children. I just find it funny that the Centereach high school has a class to teach kids how to read. I thought the kids should know how to read by high school. Thats the no child get left behind and how the Middle Country school district pushes them along instead of dealing with the problem head on and immediately. Instead of taking care of the problem they drag their feet until they no longer can push it aside. If all the teachers would stand up to the administration for the benefit of the children like the they stand up for their salaries everybody would be happy. Even the administration would be happy because the children are succeed, parents are happy that their children are getting a good education. Teachers would be happy since they are seeing their students succeed. ISN"T THAT WHY THEY WENT INTO TEACHING?

Education today
March 07, 2010 | 10:53 PM "It's the fact that our taxes continue to rise and our education quality continues in the spiral downward"
This is not the fault of the teachers. In my experience with all of my kids going through the district, the teachers did the best they could with hardly any help from the administration. The district keeps all the money and now I hear that they gave all the administrators I-Phones!
As far a I'm concerned the teachers of this district are worth more than what this district pays them. If this community thinks that a teacher with a master's degree + that they pay all on their own, supplies that they mostly pay out of pocket, and the enormous resposiblility of taking care of our children for most of the day does not deserve a beginning salary of 40,000 (which is this district's starting salary) they are nuts!
re: field trip
March 06, 2010 | 09:00 AM so 6 substitute teachers for 2 days? Who is approving these things???????????
Field Trips and teachers
March 05, 2010 | 08:58 PM Usually the students pay for it out of their pockets or they fundraise. The students left behind, if there are any, usually go in another class. I have had two kids graduate and still another in Newfield. Instead of sitting secretly by your computer putting everyone and everything down why not sign your name, go to a board meeting, or take some other positive action about situations you feel so passionate about. But I quess that would require a backbone or some courage.
Re: field trip
March 05, 2010 | 06:05 PM "who is paying for this? who is teaching the kids while 6 teachers are out of the classroom for 2 days?"
If they are in fact out, then it's none other than we the taxpayers who foot the bill for the subs, as usual.
We taxpayers are the district's money tree, or so the district thinks.
field trip
March 05, 2010 | 03:33 PM Did I hear correctly that 6 teachers from newfield are out for 2 days on a field trip to washington dc? In these difficult economic times? who is paying for this? who is teaching the kids while 6 teachers are out of the classroom for 2 days?
define talent?
March 03, 2010 | 06:40 PM "Show me one starting teacher that will not take a job at MCCSD because of the low starting salary."
Newly graduated teachers take the first opportunity that comes along. MCCSD is one of the largest districts in the county, so there is more likely to be a position open here than in a smaller district. Another reason so many positions come available in the district is that there is a rapid turnover as teachers become dissatisfied with the district and look elsewhere. Teachers who are happy with their district tend to stay put. So yes, there is no shortage of applicants, but do NOT assume that every one of them is talented.
By the way, what is your career choice that allows you to be so in-tune to the business of luring, hiring, retaining teachers? Or the task facing a new graduate hungry to begin working?
Enought talent
March 01, 2010 | 12:15 PM Show me a MCCSD teacher that is losing their house or cannot buy something that they want. Please stop your crying about being the lowest paid district. You make a great salary for working half a year. As far as talent not coming to MCCSD. Show me one starting teacher that will not take a job at MCCSD because of the low starting salary. Their are enough starting teachers out their that have talent that could probably fill every position in MCCSD. SO talent is not a issue. More of a issue is this talent being sought out. Not given to a friend of a friend. Work with what you have because you are a professional.
re: cuts
February 28, 2010 | 01:41 PM "Blaming teachers has always been an easy answer. Some parents need to stop being friends with their kids and taking their side all the time and respecting what teachers have to deal with."
What can parents do to help teachers? Send kids to school well-rested. Send them prepared with the materials they need daily. Send them with a good understanding of what is acceptable behavior, and what is NOT acceptable. Insist that students do their studying and homework. Keep their cell phones and electronics home; they don't need these things in school, and they do nothing for their education. Please PLEASE do not take students on lengthy vacations during the school year. PLEASE respond to teachers when they call or write letters.
You notice that all of these things are out of the control of schools/teachers. It seems that all too often we hear about the expectations of teachers and schools, but rarely do we hear about the expectations placed on students and parents.
Snow Job Part II
February 27, 2010 | 02:22 PM Another snow storm has once again left our new Middle Country Road sidewalks covered with snow. A nice job by three local retailers. The three are all banks including Chase, Bank of Smithtown and Capital One. A quick look showed every other retailer didn't do a thing. Why did we bother spending all this money and no one either cares enough to clear the sidewalks off. To get to the bus stop in front of KFC in Centereach one has to walk through a lot of snow. Lets hope this little oversight gets corrected soon.
