Filmmaker and lead actor B.J. Novak is ironic about people who tend to believe in conspiracy theories.

Focus Features has released the trailer for Revenge, the directorial debut of The Office star and co-creator B.J. Novak. He also played a leading role in the film, and also wrote the script.

Novak played the successful and confident radio host Ben Manalowitz (Novak), who flies from New York to Texas for the funeral of a girl named Abilene. Ben had slept with Abilene several times in the past, but her family mistakenly thought he was her boyfriend. While in Abilene’s hometown, Ben finds herself under the wing of her brother, Ty (Boyd Holbrook). Ti is sure that in fact Abilene did not die from an overdose of synthetic drugs, but was murdered. There is no evidence to support the violent death theory, but Ben agrees to help Ty conduct his own investigation and record a podcast about it. Unbeknownst to T, though, what Ben is really trying to show in this podcast is how people are willing to believe in conspiracy theories rather than accepting reality.

Along with Novak and Holbrook, Revenge stars Dove Cameron (T’s sister), Issa Rae (Ben’s boss), Ashton Kutcher, J. Smith-Cameron, Isabella Amara and Analee Tipton.
Revenge will be released in North America on July 29. The film will have its world premiere on June 12 at the New York Tribeca Film Festival.
